Z wnętrza / From the Inside

Portret prawdziwy”.

Tomek Szwan i Janusz Barycki już kilka lat wcześniej pracowali nad upamiętnieniem Beksińskich: w 2009 roku zrealizowali wspólnie dokument biograficzny poświęcony Tomaszowi Beksińskiemu “Doktor Jimmy” (był on prezentowany m.in. podczas 50. Krakowskiego Festiwalu Filmowego) oraz zorganizowali festiwal “Love Never Dies, czyli dlaczego pamiętamy Tomka Beksińskiego”.

From the Inside – a documentary about the Beksinski family
The aim of our campaign on Wspieram.to is to raise funds that will help us complete the works on a feature-length documentary about Zdzisław Beksiński and his family – From the Inside.

Few people are aware that Zdzislaw Beksinski kept a running record of his life not only by keeping a diary but also by capturing his daily life on videotapes. Already as a young boy his dream was to become a film director, and since he bought his first camera, filming had become his obsession. These very VHS tapes from the archives of Historical Museum in Sanok provide the footage that will be used to make the documentary.

The first version of the film – a 44-minute documentary – had its only public screening a few years back in Beksiński’s hometown, Sanok. The makers of this unique picture had been trying to get additional funds to have the work completed for many years, unfortunately, in vain.

How did it all start?
In 2012 the first version of the documentary was made as the realization of the idea of Tomek Szwan who is linked to Beksiński Foundation. Cezary Grzesiuk, an experienced and recognized film editor took upon himself the difficult task of making a coherent film out of almost 300 hours of original footage recorded on VHS tapes from 1989-1994. The producer of the film was Beskiński Foundation and his chairman Janusz Barycki. The result was a 44-minute-long documentary aptly titled From the Inside.

Tomek Szwan and Janusz Barycki had collaborated before on popularization of the Beksinski family: in 2009, they jointly made a documentary devoted to Tomek Beksinski called “Doctor Jimmy” (it was shown during the 50th edition of the Krakow Film Festival). The film’s first screening took place during the festival “Love Never Dies, or why do we remember Tomek Beskinski” that was organized by Tomek Szwan and Janusz Barycki as well.

What’s next?
The documentary From the Inside had its only one public screening before, and its makers decided to gather additional funds to complete the work and make the film available to a wide audience, both in cinemas and on TV. Months assed and there was nobody willing to support this idea. Until finally…

The first institution to trust this project was Polish Film Institute that decided to grant a subsidy to make a feature-length documentary about the Beksinski family! Still the amount granted was not sufficient to close the budget. That’s when the makers of the film decided to turn to the artist’s fans in Poland and around the world. It coincided with the onset of collaboration between Beksiński Foundation and Kamil Śliwiński who coordinates the popular social media profiles devoted to life and work of Zdzisław Beksiński.

After a few meetings and discussing various options we decided to launch a crowdfunding campaign. With joint efforts, and the support of Wspieram.to and a full blessing of Historical Museum in Sanok, we drafted an action plan and its first realization is the project we’re looking at right now!

Kibicuje im, bo temat, jak wiele razy publicznie wspominałem, jest wart niejednego filmu, a chłopaki mają szansę przy okazji zrobić nieszablonowy dokument.
